Teryne Jenkins : Dominica




Dominica is a mountainous country located in the Caribbean. To be specific, the country itself is located in between the countries Guadeloupe and Martinique. The population of Dominica is 70,000, and its' capital, Roseau, has a population of 27,000. Most of Dominica's population are descendants of African slaves. When it comes to communicating,  English and French patois are the two main languages, while the two main religions are Roman Catholic and Protestant. The country of Dominica consists of high volcanic activity, along with boiling pools and geysers. Dominica is considered a poor country that depends on banana exports to function. 


The flag of Dominica represents many different meaningful things. The emblem consists of ten stars along with its' national bird, The Sisserou parrot. A flight towards greater heights and fulfillment of aspiration is what the meaning of this emblem displays. The Dominica Coat of Arms is also where the parrot comes from, which makes the bird a seal of the country. The ten lime green stars represents the ten parishes of the country. By all of the stars being the same color and the same size, represents an equal status of each parish displaying equality. The red section represents Dominica's commitment to social justice. The yellow, black, and white lines crossed on the flag represents the Trinity of God.
 Dominica's agriculture is what the country is most dependent on. Their main export is bananas. They also are known to export citrus, mangos, root crops, coconuts, and cocoa. Other than its agriculture, its population consists of mostly African Americans. 86% are black, 9.1% are mixed, and 4.9% of the population is considered other. Dominica is known for the many celebrations they have such as Independence day, which is November 3rd. Lastly, these celebrations take place in many famous cities there such as Portsmouth, Wotton Waven, and Mero.
